At a village height of nearly 1,750m, Obertauern is one of the most snow-safe resorts in Austria. Despite expectations, this is no purpose-built resort - Obertauern lies on a mountain pass in the Tauern mountain-range and was once a vital post station on the Salzburg-Villach route.
Today's traffic now takes a much easier route, by Autobahn and tunnel, and Obertauern dedicates itself to hospitality and winter sports.
