Reviews
St. Anton am Arlberg
Many people purchase cars like a BMW simply because of its reputation, panache or exclusivity - that is until they drive it, and discover that it is also a damned good and highly entertaining vehicle. This is a suitable analogy to use for one of Europe's finest and most reputable ski resorts, St. Anton. Set in the Arlberg region, St. Anton also embraces the villages and exclusive ski resorts of Lech, St. Christoph, Stuben and Zürs. If you drive a 'beamer' and like a label or two on your clothes then this is the location for you.
The Snow
With over 250km of marked piste, St. Anton is not considered one of the finest resorts worldwide for nothing. The pistes, which face all four points of the compass, are demanding and infrastructure access to them is first class including a wonderful mountain railway amongst others. Beginners might be advised to look elsewhere since this resort is so good (or should we say arduous), it played host to the 2001 World Ski Championships. The black slopes will test even the best of skiers and should be approached with caution. Intermediates and snowboarders are also well catered for with wide and challenging red slopes, which might qualify as black in other resorts.
Après ski
St Anton isn't short on options for places to quench your thirst after a long day on the slopes. The Crazy Kangaroo is probably the most famous but the Mooserwirt is the current flavour of the month, allegedly dispensing more beer than any other bar in Austria! Apart from drinking and skiing, St. Anton offers a host of other more sedate activities to all manner of holidaymakers. There is a ski museum, indoor tennis court, bowling and paragliding as well as some elite and somewhat tempting shops, which might lighten your purse a little.
